Windows 7: Release Candidate

Published by tmasterslayer at 1:52 pm under Computers/Tech Edit This

The other day I was trying to edit some video in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and I noticed that it was quite choppy. I fiddled with some settings and at the end I came to the conclusion that my graphics card couldn’t handle a dual display when editing video. However I then chalked it up to Vista being the culprit. This turned out to be true. I think at least.

I have never been a basher of Windows Vista since it has never really given me any problems, at least not problems that I did not face with other operating systems. Then, however, I found it holding me back when I wanted to edit some video. So I googled Windows 7 seeing where it would take me. I did not want to install the beta again but when I got to the Windows website I saw that you could download a official version for free that you can test. I thought it was a great idea so I signed up to be a Release Candidate. This helps Microsoft by sending them bug reports while I’m using it. I don’t mind helping them out at all so I installed it on my computer and now Premiere Pro is running just fine dual screen.

In fact my entire computer is working better. Vista wasn’t noticeably faster at all really for me, but Windows 7 is really doing a great job. I have Aero turned on and everything and it’s not killing my machine. It was a little tricky at first getting the drivers but I got them figured out sure enough and not I’m using it as my primary computer. The only thing that bugs me at all is the fact that I used to use a program called “UltraMon” on my Vista machine to put a second task bar on my second monitor, since I have 2 22″ monitors next to each other. However UltraMon does notwork on Windows 7 and just crashes on Launch. However it’s a small price to pay for superior performance.

The Release Candidate version will expire in May of next year but by then I’ll have gotten a new copy of Windows 7 the official release. Just in case any of you were wondering, the beta was build 7000 and this Release Candidate version is build 7100.
